Cream or sugar?
It’s a standard question. A reasonable question. Most people seem ready to answer it at any time.
It turns my brain into a black hole.
Let me back up.
T and I treat ourselves to breakfast at the same diner a few times a month. The caffeine angels who run it bring us coffee first thing. They know us by now.
What they don’t know is whether I’ll want cream or sugar. Even though I’d say we’re regulars at this point.
They can’t know. Because I don’t know if I’ll want cream or sugar.
It’s true: 20 seconds before I sip what I know will be roughly the same coffee blend, from the same local roaster, I don’t know if I’ll want to add cream or sugar.
Of course, they asked me in the beginning.
